"Standing on the shoulders of giants": A Festschrift in honour of Wolfgang Mieder on the occasion of his 80th birthday

Wolfgang Mieder is a leading international proverb scholar who edited “Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship” (1984-2021) and introduced its Supplement Series and Bibliographies. He has authored or been involved with over 250 books besides numerous articles. While his scholarship ranges from fairy tales, legends, and folk songs to philological and literary studies, his expertise lies above all in international paremiology which this book reflects.

Fifty-five scholars from twelve diverse countries wished to celebrate him, the one whose legendary scholarship has inspired and influenced all of them, with ““Standing on the Shoulders of Giants”: A Festschrift in Honour of Wolfgang Mieder on the Occasion of his 80th Birthday” as a sign of their deep appreciation, admiration, friendship and love.

The Festschrift contains forty-three essays in English and German, many drawing on Wolfgang Mieder’s work. The wide variety of topics and research approaches demonstrates the enormous influence of a single man, a giant on giants’ shoulders.

Ovaj zbornik znanstvenih radova na engleskom i njemačkom jeziku nastao je u čast 80. rođendana profesora Wolfgang Miedera, dugogodišnjeg urednika časopisa Proverbium. Zbornik je treća tematska urednička knjiga nastala u okviru edicije Proverbium Online Supplement čije su urednice izv. prof. dr. sc. Melita Aleksa Varga i dr.sc. Hrisztalina Hrisztova-Gotthardt. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Mieder vodeći je paremiolog današnjice i sinonim za znanstvenika koji se bavi poslovicama. Do sada je objavio 128, a uredio 148 knjiga o poslovicama. Objavio je 638 znanstvenih i stručnih radova. Njegovu veličinu osim broja publikacija potvrđuje i veliki broj najbližih suradnika i prijatelja koji su odabrani za pisanje poglavlja u ovom svečanom zborniku, koji broji 43 rada na engleskom i njemačkom jeziku podijeljenih na 8 tematskih skupina: Proverbs in texts and contexts, Proverbs and cognitive linguistics, Proverbs, rhetoric, media, advertising, Anti-proverbs and modern proverbs, Proverbs and contrastive linguistics, Proverbs and folkloristics, Empirical paremiology, Paremiography and paremiology – diachronic view.
